Disaster Relief

Has the Federal Government done enough to help people recover from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita?

(67% of the GOVT 2302.8006 thought that the Federal Government has done enough).

I echo the opinion that the government has probably done plenty to alleviate hurricane victims, it has been two years and if people aren't back on their feet by now, I can't help but wonder if they aren't trying. Anyone who would expect someone to help them when they aren't willing to help themselves is exhibiting selfish behavior.

Say you're a Kansas farmer and a tornado touches down and blows down your farm, your barn, your grain silos, etc. Yeah, it sucks. Yeah, it was no one's fault, but do you sit around and wait for the government to rebuild your farm and put your life back together for you? If you do, you may well find yourself still barking up that tree for government relief two years later, not unlike victims of the hurricanes. Or, like any responsible person would likely do, take matters into your own hands and begin rebuilding your own life?

Fact is, bad things happen to good people all the time. The only difference is how you handle the situation. Seize control of your future and repair your situation, or you can complain for 4 years about how the government hasn't done enough to pick up the broken pieces of your life. Ultimately it's your choice.

I totally agree with what Derek has said. It all comes down to accountability. Yes you should expect the government to help, but should they be expected to baby you. In the end, it is your life and you are responsible for your own quality of life. Just face reality people! Get your stuff together and stop sitting around waiting for handouts...

I don't agree with this because if the government did everything to help rebuild then gas prices would be lowered because the refineries would be rebuilt. Or you would hear that the money for gas prices is going to cost to help rebuild it. We have to remember that yes, it has been two years but do you honestly think that there are enough workers to rebuild an entire city in two years. It would be like saying your town was completely destroyed by a natural disaster and it was built right back to where it was in teo years right before the incident.

Yes, the government has helped, but being that the war in Iraq is going on you don"t hear about the help the government is giving. Otherwise there wouldn't be refugees still living throughout the United States.
