The US and Israel

Is it right for the US to support Israel?

(89% of the GOVT 2302.8245 class thought yes.)

I believe that it is correct that the U.S.A. helps Israel. This country is being attacked from countries that do not allow it to exist, and want to destroy it. In this article, it is mentioned that the current President George Bush visited Israel on its 60th anniversary of birth; and it is also mentioned that “...activists planned to release 21,915 black balloons -- one for each day since Israel's creation.” From my point of view, I think that the surrounding countries do not want to accept that the specific region occupied by Israelis now belongs to Israelis only, and that they have no authority to use the force in order to remove the people from that zone.

I agree with the support of Isreal. If we were in their shoes we would be looking for some to intervene and say here take these weapons. It is very unfair to allow this nation to be stripped of their sacred triangle and feel as though no one in the world cares. Upon the 60th anniversary today, it seems headlines were soaring. Isreal has been given these weapons and now it is their choice on when and how they will protect themselves and use them. The best thing for the US to do now is just be an ally and wait until we are really needed by Isreal in the event that a war arises.

I agreed with most of the statements in class but also thought that looking at the situation from a political standpoint, it's right to support Israel because they're the only free democracy in that part of the world (up until the current efforts in Iraq). I think it would be strange if we, as the most prominent democracy in the world, didn't offer aid to them. Also, looking at it from a military perspective, their physical location is in a a crucial part of the world especially considering the war and what's going on over there. It's a very strategic location and of course it would be beneficial if we had a friend there.

I believe that a powerful government such as the United Ststes should remain neutral in this circumstance. I believe we should do whatever we can to prevent either parties from more warfare. Israel is by no means a powerless nation, however small it may seem. I think we should gather the best intelligence committee we can and send them over there and not leave until we have a negotiation. If we have the intellect to make bombs, surely we have the capability to create peace.

I used to feel that Isreal deserved our unwavering support in its effort to protect themselves from their neighbors. A few days ago, I heard a conversation with Jimmy Carter where he talked about the Middle East Peace Process. It seems Isreal is not complying with the agreement that allows the Palentines ownership of sacred area. It continues to be developed further and further by Irealis. Palentines carry out the lionshare of the matyr bomb plots to kill innocent citizens of Isreal, but Isreal does it too. There needs to be an agreement and both sides need to abide by the sanctions. Isreal is not the innocent party here.
